Small Successes ~ 8/27/09

1. Flylady. I am fluttering barely above the ground. I've shined the sink. Cleared off hot spots. Reading the reminders!

2. I took all of the kids out yesterday for a day of fun: gas station: car wash! Chick-fil-A! Took food to the park to have a picnic! Instead got attacked by bees and had to eat in the van! (Nobody got stung ). Walked around the park on the path (away from bees). It was a nice break in the day.

3. Listening:

"By waiting and by calm you shall be saved, in quiet and in trust your strength lies." (Is. 30:15)

"Commit your life to the Lord, trust in him and he will act, so that your justice breaks forth like the light, your cause like the noon-day sun.
Be still before the Lord and wait in patience; do not fret at the man who prospers; a man who makes evil plots to bring down the needy and the poor.
Calm your anger and forget your rage; do not fret, it only leads to evil. For those who do evil shall perish; the patient shall inherit the land.
A little longer - and the wicked shall have gone. Look at his place, he is not there. But the humble shall own the land and enjoy the fullness of peace. " (Psalm 37)

The Simple Woman's Daybook ~ 8/24/09

FOR TODAY 8/24/09...

Outside my window...
77 degrees and "Fair" with a high of 85 degrees with a possibility of isolated thunderstorms later

I am thinking...
how glad I am I didn't have to send my kids "Back to School" today!

I am thankful for...
freedom of homeschool

From the learning rooms...
we've been getting a lot of schoolwork done this summer with these long weeks with no plans

From the kitchen...
I just took out some burger, hon.

I am creating...
Ryan and I are creating plans for a new home!

I am going...
No where all week. If you are family reading this: feel free to pick up a kid or 2 for an outing this week!!! It will be fun!!! (and give us a little break :P)

I am reading...
Absolutely nothing.

I am hoping...
House plans are invading my brain, so I hope that everything goes smoothly in regards to this.

I am hearing...
Not much, actually.

Around the house...
Thinking how we will pack up all of this you-know-what.

One of my favorite things...
looking at houses with all of the kids. At one point they were running circles around the yard of one house (that we liked!) and my heart was full.

A few plans for the rest of the week:
My little buddy E turns 2 on Saturday! He shares a birthday with his great-grandfather, Pap, and there will be a celebration for these 2 in West Virginia! Also Blaze (Church middle school group) is starting back up for R, and he has a cook-out to go to Sunday afternoon.

This? or That?

A hard decision I have to make every day: This?

That is Baby B all cuddled up in our bed for his afternoon nap. Look at the nice big space next to him, perfect to lay down and snuggle up. I could just rest my eyes for a few minutes...

Or that?
What is this guy doing? What is on his face? I wish you could HEAR the volume in each picture. Let's look again. This?
Ahhhhhhh. Quiet. Fan. Snuggly. Or that?

AHHHHH!!! Can you hear it? Yes, this is a daily decision I have to struggle with every day. I choose "that" every day. What would you choose???

Park Quest 2009 Finale

Last saturday we attended the Park Quest Finale at Tuckahoe State Park. This was the final competition for the families who completed at least 8 challenges at the 14 participating state parks across Maryland. It was a hot day but the Park Service, Rangers, and volunteers did a great job of keeping everybody well fed and hydrated. There were plenty of free drinks and Park Quest logo water bottles to fill up at the various water stations throughout the park.

We spent the night in Denton at our sister/aunt Kerry's house which was only about 15 minutes from the park. We arrived at the parking area about 10:30, loaded up the stroller with all our gear and hopped on the "hay-less" hay ride to the event area. There were 7 challenge stations mixed in among the food area, water stations, and display areas. One of the displays was "Scales and Tails", which is live animals including snakes, turtles, owls and other cool critters. The little kids really liked this display. Each team was to compete in each of the 7 challenges in which points were earned. At the end of the day, the 6 teams with the most points won 1 of 6 prize packages which were really nice. The Camping, Biking, and Kayaking packages included really nice gear for each activity for a family of four. The other 3 packages were vacation packages for Deep Creek Lake.

We didn't place in the top 6 so we didn't win any of the packages but we had a good time anyway. We are not sure of our final score or some of the scores for the events, as we didn't see them posted before they announced the winners. They also gave out randomly drawn door prizes throughout the day but we came up empty there too. The 7 challenges were Fishing, Disc Golf, Ranger Round Up, Orienteering, Putting out a "Fire", Park Photo Quest and Wildlife Photo Quest.

Each challenge had to be attempted by at least one adult and one kid. Ryan and R. did the fishing one, which was casting a weighted, hookless line at some circular targets. It was hard and we only scored 4 points but that was an improvement on our performance last year at the same event. Amy and R. participated in the Disc Golf challenge in which they had to play 3 holes of disc golf on the course within the park. They had to alternate throws and did well scoring a 5 on each of the three holes for a total score of 15. We are not sure how they awarded points for this one but we figured the three teams with the lowest scores earned a certain number of points. For the Ranger Round Up we had to find 5 Park Rangers (wasn't too hard) and ask them for a playing card. You turned in your cards at the end and the best poker hands earned points. Our hand was a High Card Ace which got us one point. Ryan and J. did the Orienteering challenge in which we were given a compass and directions to travel a certain distance/direction, then travel another certain distance/direction, then do it again and then estimate your finishing position. We were just a bit off and scored 6 out of 10 possible points. It would have been much easier if we were allowed to use our GPS receiver. The "Fire" Challenge was fun. They had these water-bag portable pumps that the park fire service uses to put out wildfires, kinda like this:
The bags were filled with water and the hand operated pump was used to knock down wooden targets painted like flames. Ryan and R. competed and knocked down the 8 targets in 10 seconds. This is another one in which we didn't know how they scored it but figured the fastest times earned a certain number of points. The Park Photo Quest we were all able to participate in but only 3 people at a time. We had 10 minutes to identify about 35 photographs of locations within the 14 parks. We thought we would have an advantage since we visited all 14 parks but some of the photos were tough to identify. I think we scored 53 out of 84 possible points. The last challenge was the wildlife photo quest. There were 25 pictures of plants and animals and a list of 50 possible names to identify them. We got 23 correct but fell for the trick questions and called a:
"Pileated Woodpecker"
a "red headed woodpecker"

and called a:
"pickerel frog"

a "leopard frog"

DUH! How could we have gotten those wrong?!?

Anyway, we had a fun time and the Park Service and Rangers really put on a great event. We received a certificate for completing it as well as cool water bottles and t-shirts for everybody to remind us of our fun summer participating in Park Quest 2009.

Small Successes ~ 8/13/09

1. I took all of the kids to the store on Tuesday. B was in the Ergo, E in the cart, and B and S had their own little carts! (Giant now offers little carts for little shoppers!) This is a small success because usually Ryan will stop at the store on the way home and pick up whatever we need.

2. All 3 big kids are registered for C.C.D. (Faith Formation) classes for the following school year!

3. I ordered Ryan and I new planners for the following year. These look like they are very well done, and I can't wait to get them to see them up close!

Pondering Pages ~ 8/11/09

Joining in with Holy Mothering...

From the August issue of Magnificat, Monday August 10, MEDITATION OF THE DAY:

How Our Life is Preserved for Eternal Life

"The Holy Spirit has come to us to be in us, so that we may learn from him how to utter the name of Jesus, how to pray, and how to profess our faith. He has come to us and in us, that we may be renewed and born again in him. He holds the roots of our lives in his hands. He is the Creator creating from the freedom of the pure fullness of love. He is able to console.
The hopelessness all around us is endless; its bitter fullness is inexhaustible, as manifold as all the life that has fallen away from the heart of God: the hopelessness of the suffering that wounds and tires, of the narrowness that constricts our sight and breathing, of the yearning that pines away, of the unalleviated pain, of the tormenting sin, and of the weakness that is powerless to rise again. The hopelessness of the dreariness when the heart knows no joy and no pain; when the days are empty and silent and everything that happens is meaningless; when one knows what life would be like if one could only love but cannot love, and when one's soul thirsts within and goes about as in a barren and dry land - is there any power sufficient to overcome this power?
There is a saying: "Send forth your Spirit and all things will be created and you shall renew the face of the earth." Do you realize that this is true - that he can come like a gentle breath "blowing where it listens and you hear the sound thereof but cannot tell whence it comes, and where it goes," and that he can touch your soul and make everything different? What was real before still remains, yet everything has been renewed. Then you become aware that you have a heart and that you, too, have received the ability to love, and things are filled with a gentle and holy meaning, and you know that everything is good and that it is worthwhile - divinely worthwhile - to be alive and to persevere.
